# Break-even ROAS and ACoS Calculator

Enter the price and costs per order to get the break-even ROAS and ACoS, the ROAS you need for a target margin, the most each order can spend on ads and the highest bid per click at your conversion rate. Works for Amazon, TikTok, Meta and Google ads.

## Break-even ROAS table

Break-even ROAS and ACoS for each margin before ads (profit per order before ads ÷ price). Below the break-even ROAS every ad-driven order loses money.

| Margin before ads | Break-even ROAS | Break-even ACoS |
|---:|---:|---:|
| 10% | 10.00 | 10% |
| 15% | 6.67 | 15% |
| 20% | 5.00 | 20% |
| 25% | 4.00 | 25% |
| 30% | 3.33 | 30% |
| 35% | 2.86 | 35% |
| 40% | 2.50 | 40% |
| 50% | 2.00 | 50% |
| 60% | 1.67 | 60% |

## How it works

1. Profit per order before ads = price × share not returned × (1 − commission − payment rate) − payment fixed fee × share not returned − fulfillment − return rate × handling per return − landed cost × (share not returned + return rate × cannot be resold).
2. Break-even ACoS = profit before ads ÷ price; break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ break-even ACoS = price ÷ profit before ads.
3. Target ACoS = break-even ACoS − target margin; target ROAS = 1 ÷ target ACoS.
4. Most ad spend per order = profit before ads; highest bid per click = most ad spend per order × conversion rate.
5. Profit per ad-driven order now = profit before ads − price ÷ current ROAS.

## Worked example

Price $24.99, landed cost $6.52, 15% commission, $5 fulfillment, 5% returns. Profit before ads is $8.94, 35.76% of the price, so break-even ROAS is 2.80 (ACoS 35.76%). To keep a 10% margin ROAS needs to reach 3.88. At a 10% conversion rate, clicks above $0.89 lose money. At the current ROAS of 4, each ad-driven order makes $2.69.

| | |
|---|---:|
| Profit per order before ads | $8.94 |
| Break-even ROAS | 2.80 |
| Break-even ACoS | 35.76% |
| Target ROAS | 3.88 |
| Target ACoS | 25.76% |
| Most ad spend per order | $8.94 |
| Highest bid per click | $0.89 |
| Profit per ad order now | $2.69 |

## Questions

### How do ROAS and ACoS relate?

ROAS = ad-attributed sales ÷ ad spend; ACoS = ad spend ÷ ad-attributed sales. One is the inverse of the other: a ROAS of 4 is an ACoS of 25%. Amazon reports ACoS; Meta, Google and TikTok mostly report ROAS.

### What does break-even ROAS mean?

The ROAS at which an ad-driven order neither makes nor loses money. If profit before ads is 25% of the price, break-even ACoS is 25% and break-even ROAS is 4. Below 4, every ad-driven order loses money.

### Should I stop ads that are below break-even?

Not always. Launches that build ranking, ads that bring organic sales and products with repeat buyers can carry losing ads for a while, as long as you know how much each order loses and for how long. This calculator looks at the ad-driven order on its own.

### Why count returns?

Ad dashboards usually count ROAS on ordered sales and don't take returns back out. Apparel returns are high, so leaving them out makes the break-even line look lower than it is, and ads that seem profitable lose money.

### How do I use the highest bid per click?

The most an order can spend on ads times the conversion rate is what one click is worth. If an order can spend $8 and 10% of clicks buy, an average cost per click above $0.80 loses money. Bid below it to keep a margin.

### How is TACoS different from ACoS?

ACoS counts only ad-attributed sales; TACoS is ad spend ÷ all sales, organic included. The more organic orders, the lower the TACoS. This calculator uses ACoS.

This is an estimate. Ad dashboards usually count ROAS on ordered sales before returns; the break-even line here already counts returns as a cost. Enter the commission and fulfillment fees for your own platform and category.
