Transfer film and paper usage calculator

Before you quote or order stock: how much DTF film or sublimation paper this job needs, and what material costs per print.

  • How many metres of film or sheets does this batch need?
  • Is it cheaper to print upright or rotated 90°?
  • What does material cost per piece, and does my quote cover it?

Shows up to the first 2 metres of a roll, or the first sheet. Shading marks margins; rectangles are design bounding boxes. Dimensions are annotated. At most 400 designs are drawn; larger layouts show only the first part.

No artwork upload; everything runs in your browser. Compares the whole batch upright vs. rotated 90°, no mixed nesting. Defaults are examples, not quotes.

Prints per metre

These left-chest, front and back dimensions are examples, not recommended sizes or industry standards. Each row uses exactly 1 metre, a 0.5 cm gap, 1 cm on each side, no leader/trailer waste or failed prints, with whole-batch rotation allowed. Length per print = 100 ÷ complete prints in that metre, including the leftover material; this is not the limit for a continuous long run.

How it works

  1. Convert dimensions to cm: 1 in = 2.54 cm; 1 ft = 0.3048 m. Include any required printed bleed in the design's bounding box.
  2. Planned prints N = ceil(delivery quantity ÷ (1 − failure rate / 100)). This budgets for a stable failure rate; it cannot guarantee enough good prints in every batch.
  3. Usable width = width − left margin − right margin. Prints per row C = floor((usable width + gap) ÷ (design width + gap)); total rows R = ceil(N ÷ C). floor rounds down; ceil rounds up.
  4. Roll length (m) = [leader + R × design height + (R − 1) × gap + trailer] ÷ 100. Add leader/trailer once per job; do not print unused slots in the last row. No extra waste for roll changes or rounding to whole purchased rolls is included.
  5. Rows per sheet = floor((sheet length − top margin − bottom margin + gap) ÷ (design height + gap)); capacity = prints per row × rows per sheet; sheets = ceil(N ÷ capacity). Total sheet length = sheets × sheet length, including the last sheet's unused area.
  6. When rotation is allowed, swap design width and height and recalculate. Pick the shorter total length (fewer sheets); break ties by shorter layout length, then keep the original orientation. No mixed sizes or orientations, and no claim of globally optimal nesting.
  7. Design area = N × design width × design height ÷ 10,000. Utilization = design bounding-box area ÷ full material area used, including expected failed prints. It is not actual ink coverage.
  8. Film / paper cost = metres × price per metre, or whole sheets × price per sheet. Ink/powder = design area × cost per m². Labor/machine cost = total metres × rate per metre (including unused sheet length).
  9. Total per print = (film/paper + ink/powder + labor/machine cost) ÷ delivery quantity. Divide CNY by the exchange rate for USD; multiply USD by it for CNY. Costs left at zero are excluded; blanks, pressing, shipping, tax and profit are separate.

Sources and assumptions

Sizes checked on 2026-10-22. Supplier sizes are optional examples, not universal standards. StoreCalc calculates the model, reference table and examples using the formulas below. Prices, exchange rate and waste settings are user inputs.

Questions

Why leave a gap?

Leaving room to cut designs apart is common practice and is also advised by Transfer Express. Use your supplier's, cutting method's and equipment's requirements; there is no universal gap. Side margins must also respect the actual printable width.

When does rotation save material?

It can increase prints per row or reduce row height. Compare the rounded-up length of the whole order. Sheets also depend on how many rows fit per sheet. Disable rotation if your production process restricts orientation.

How do sublimation paper and DTF film differ?

Their rectangular roll layout uses the same formula. Enter their actual widths, margins, prices and failure rates separately. DTF commonly uses ink and adhesive powder; do not add DTF powder to sublimation costs. This calculator does not assess material, ink or fabric compatibility.

How can I reduce waste?

Compare widths and rotation, reduce unused slots in the last row, and measure actual leader/trailer waste. Keep the required equipment margins and cutting gaps. Mixing different design sizes may save more, but is outside this calculator.

What if the sheet price includes printing?

Enter the supplier's per-sheet quote as the material price, and set ink/powder and included labor to zero to avoid double counting. The 22 × 24 in preset is one supplier's sheet size. Confirm whether your quote specifies full sheet size or net printable area before adding margins.

Does higher utilization always mean lower cost?

No. Utilization uses rectangular bounding boxes, not visible pixels, and different widths may have different prices per metre. Update the price whenever you change material size. Failure rate is a planning assumption; use your batch records.
